The problem in the context:

  1. 5% of adults suffer from depression or 400 millions of people according to the World Health Organisation;
  2. In average a person spends 27 minutes per day to decide what movie or tv show to watch as per Statista, 2003 ;

White paper research:

  • Watching a particular movie can influence mood, showed a 2022 study at the Middle East Technical University.

In order to empathize with users of streaming platforms I conducted interviews and the main findings were:

Empathy map: Top Left (Why Users Say): Users express frustration about spending excessive time on streaming platforms searching for the perfect movie. Top Right (Thinks): Users contemplate the time wasted and consider what TV shows are currently trending. Bottom Left (Feels): Users feel the need to resort to searching for trending movies online and seeking recommendations from friends and family, spending considerable time deciding what to watch. Bottom Right (Feels): Users experience feelings of frustration, anxiety, and being overwhelmed by the decision-making process.

Thus, streaming platforms users are dissatisfied with the huge amount of time they spend searching for something to watch.

Competitive audit:

The competition had little to no personalization based on peoples’ mood.

So the main problem is:

How to shorten movies’ and tv shows’ searching time while improving mental health ?

The solution is an app that suggest movies and shows based on peoples’ mood :

Two high fidelity prototypes of the app: first one: wootch baseline: watch your mood, second one: wootch, how are you feeling today ? then 15 emojis to pick a mood : happy, sad, anxious, calm, naughty, fun, curious, nerdy
